Quick Answer:

To apply for an Indiana real estate salesperson license after passing the exam, submit your application through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (PLA) portal. You'll need your PSI exam score report, 90 hours of pre-licensing education certificate, a signed broker sponsorship, a IdentoGO background check, and the $60 application fee. Your license is issued inactive until your broker activates it in the PLA system.

At a Glance

  • Application fee: $60 (non-refundable, paid via PLA portal)
  • PSI score validity: 1 year from passing date
  • Processing time: 1–3 weeks after complete application
  • Pre-licensing requirement: 90 hours from an approved Indiana school

Before You Apply: Requirements

You can’t submit your application until the following are complete. A missing item will cause the PLA to return your application.

  • Passed both the national and Indiana state portions of the PSI real estate broker exam (75% or higher on each)
  • Completed a 90-hour pre-licensing course from an approved Indiana school
  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Found a licensed Indiana broker to sponsor you
  • Initiated or completed your background check through IdentoGO

Important: Your passing PSI exam score is valid for one year. If you do not apply before it expires, you’ll need to retake the exam.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for Your Indiana Real Estate License

Step 1 — Complete the Background Check Through IdentoGO

After receiving your “Indiana Licensure Application Received” email and Service Code, schedule your digital fingerprinting appointment through IdentoGO. Enter your Service Code, confirm your license type, accept the required acknowledgements, choose a location and appointment time, complete your information, submit payment, and save your confirmation page.

Step 2 — Secure a Sponsoring Broker

Indiana law requires a licensed managing broker to sponsor your broker license. Until they activate it through the PLA portal, your license remains inactive and you cannot legally practice real estate. Contact brokerages before applying so you can activate your license quickly. Your sponsoring managing broker must hold an active license in good standing.

Step 3 — Gather Required Documents

Collect everything before logging into the PLA portal:

  • PSI score report (passing score certificate or confirmation email)
  • Certificate of completion from your 90-hour pre-licensing course
  • Sponsoring managing broker's name, license number, and brokerage details
  • Social Security Number (for identity verification)
  • Payment method for the $60 application fee (credit or debit card)

Step 4 — Submit Your Application

  1. Go to the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency portal and create or log in to your account.
  2. Select "Real Estate Broker" from the license type menu and complete the online application form.
  3. Upload required documents, add your sponsoring broker's information, and pay the $60 application fee.

You'll receive a confirmation email once submitted.

Step 5 — PLA Reviews Your Application

The Indiana Real Estate Commission reviews your application.

This typically takes 1–3 weeks for a complete submission. If anything is missing or flagged, such as a background issue requiring further review, the PLA will contact you.

You can check your application status anytime in your PLA account.

Step 6 — Sponsoring Broker Activates Your License

Once your license is approved, it will remain inactive until your sponsoring broker logs into the PLA portal and activates it under their brokerage.

Only after activation can you legally represent clients, show property, write offers, or earn a commission in Indiana. Confirm with your broker that they've completed this step.

Disclosing Criminal History

The application asks about past legal or disciplinary matters. Indiana reviews each situation individually, so a past issue does not automatically prevent you from getting licensed. The Indiana Real Estate Commission looks at factors like the nature of the situation, how much time has passed, and any evidence of rehabilitation or positive change.

If you have concerns about your background, you can request a preliminary determination from the PLA before applying. Most importantly, answer all questions honestly, since inaccurate information can delay or affect your application.

License Renewal: What Comes Next

Indiana real estate brokers need to complete 12 hours of continuing education each year between July 1 and June 30 to keep their license active. At least 6 of those hours must be in Core courses approved by the Indiana Real Estate Commission.

Note: Your license must remain connected to an active sponsoring broker. If you switch brokerages, you’ll need to update your sponsorship through the PLA portal. Practicing without an active sponsor is against Indiana law.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply before finding a broker? You need a sponsoring broker to complete the application. Your license can still be approved in inactive status while you look for a broker, but you cannot practice until a broker activates your license in the PLA system.

Where do I apply for an Indiana real estate broker license?

Applications can be submitted online or by mail for new real estate broker licenses.

What is the Indiana real estate license application fee?

The fee is $60 which is non-refundable. Separate IdentoGO background check fees run approximately $20–$30.

Do I need to retake the Indiana real estate exam if my score expires?

Yes, you must retake both the national and state portions of the exam. Your score is valid for one year from the date you passed.

Final Thoughts

Getting your Indiana real estate license after passing the exam is largely paperwork and timing. The process itself is straightforward. You’ll pay a $60 fee and submit your documents, but the biggest delays usually come from steps that require advance planning — like starting your IdentoGO background check early, finding a sponsoring broker, and watching your one-year PSI exam expiration window.

Don't wait until everything feels "perfect" to apply. The sooner you submit a complete application, the sooner your broker can activate your license and you can start working.

The Indiana Real Estate Commission and the PLA have made the process fully online and efficient. Use that to your advantage. Apply promptly, stay in communication with your sponsoring broker, and verify your license status directly in your PLA account once submitted.

You did the hard part by passing the exam. The application is just the last step between you and your license.

TL;DR: After passing the PSI real estate exam, you can apply for your Indiana real estate salesperson license through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (PLA) portal at mylicense.in.gov. To complete your application, you'll need your PSI score report, a certificate of completion from your 90-hour Indiana pre-licensing course, a sponsoring broker's information, a completed IdentoGO fingerprinting appointment for your background check, and the $60 non-refundable application fee. The Indiana Real Estate Commission typically processes complete applications within 1–3 weeks. Once approved, your license is issued in inactive status and must be activated by your sponsoring managing broker through the PLA portal before you can legally represent clients or earn a commission. Keep in mind that your PSI exam score is only valid for one year, so it's important to apply promptly after passing. After activation, Indiana real estate brokers must complete 12 hours of continuing education annually — at least 6 of which must be Commission-approved Core courses — to keep their license in good standing.
