FAQs About Getting a Real Estate License in Alaska
To make the process easier, here are the most common questions we get from students becoming agents about what it takes to get licensed and start a career in real estate.
1. How much does a real estate license cost in Alaska?
In 2026, the total cost to obtain an Alaska salesperson license is approximately $1,400 to $1,700.
- 40-Hour Pre-License Education: $350 – $600 (varies by provider).
- State Exam Fee: $100
- License Application Fee: $390
- Errors & Omissions (E&O) Insurance: Approx. $540 – $650 annually
2. How long does it take to get a license in Alaska?
Most students complete the process in 2 to 4 months. While the 40-hour course can be finished in a week, you must factor in time for the state exam and the Alaska Real Estate Commission (AREC) to process your application, which can take 4–6 weeks.
3. What are the requirements for an Alaska real estate license?
- Be at least 19 years old (Alaska’s age of majority).
- Have a high school diploma or GED.
- Complete 40 hours of AREC-approved pre-license education.
- Pass the salesperson exam with a score of 75% or higher on both sections.
- Secure a Sponsoring Broker and obtain E&O Insurance.
- Note: Alaska does not require fingerprinting but does require a background history disclosure.
4. Does Alaska have license reciprocity with other states?
Alaska does not have formal reciprocity agreements. However, it offers "Licensure by Endorsement" for agents from any state.
- Requirements: You must have an active license in good standing, pass the Alaska State Law portion of the exam, and complete a 6-hour Alaska Real Estate Law course within 24 months of your application.
5. What is the "Post-License" requirement in Alaska?
New salespersons must complete 30 hours of Post-Licensing Education (PLE) within their first year of licensure. You must submit an Affidavit of Post-Licensing Education within 30 days of completing the one-year period. If you miss this deadline, your license will automatically lapse.
6. Can I take the Alaska real estate exam online?
Currently, Alaska requires exams to be taken in person at a Pearson VUE testing center. Centers are primarily located in Anchorage, with limited sessions in Fairbanks and Juneau.
7. How often do I need to renew my Alaska real estate license?
Licenses are renewed every two years (biennially) on January 31 of even-numbered years.
- Continuing Education (CE): You must complete 20 hours of CE per cycle, which must include 8 hours of designated core topics and 12 hours of electives.
- Renewal Fee: Approximately $120
