FAQs About Getting a Real Estate License in Alabama
To make the process easier, here are the most common questions we get from students becoming agents about what it takes to get licensed and start a career in real estate.
1. How much does an Alabama real estate license cost?
The total estimated cost to become a fully licensed agent in Alabama is between $700 and $1,100.
- 60-Hour Pre-License Course: $300 – $600 (varies by provider).
- State Exam Fee: $70
- Temporary License Application: $210
- Fingerprinting & Background Check: Approximately $48.25 (via Fieldprint).
- Original License Fee: $170
2. How long does it take to get a real estate license in Alabama?
Most applicants finish the initial process in 2 to 4 months. However, Alabama uses a unique two-tier system:
- Temporary License: Issued after passing the exam.
- Original License: Issued only after you complete a mandatory 30-hour Post-License course within your first 6–12 months of being licensed.
3. What are the requirements for an Alabama real estate license?
- Be at least 19 years old.
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Complete 60 hours of approved pre-license education.
- Pass the Alabama salesperson exam with a score of 70% or higher within 6 months of course completion.
- Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or legally present alien.
4. Does Alabama have license reciprocity with other states?
Yes. Alabama offers full reciprocity to active licensees from any other state.
- Requirement: You must complete a 6-hour Alabama License Law course and pass the State-specific portion (40 questions) of the Alabama exam.
- Documentation: You must submit a "Certificate of Licensure" (license history) issued within the last 120 days.
5. When should I start my background check?
You must complete your background check after passing your exam. AREC recommends scheduling your fingerprinting appointment the same day you mail in your license application to ensure the results (valid for a limited window) match up with your file.
7. How often do I need to renew my Alabama real estate license?
Licenses expire on September 30 of even-numbered years.
- Crucial Deadline: You must submit your renewal application by August 31 to avoid a $150 late fee.
- Continuing Education (CE): You must complete 15 hours of CE (including 3 hours of mandatory "Risk Management") by September 30.
