Sign up for the required number of CE hours specific to your state’s regulations before your license renewal deadline. Each state mandates different requirements, typically including a mix of mandatory and elective courses to keep you informed about updates in laws, ethics, and industry standards.
CE courses can typically be completed online, in-person, or through live virtual formats, depending on your state’s approved options. Ensure you fulfill both core and elective requirements within the designated timeframe, covering subjects relevant to your practice and state guidelines.
After completing the courses, your education provider will usually report your credits directly to your state’s real estate licensing authority. Be sure to keep your certificates of completion and renew your license through your state’s portal before it expires to stay in compliance.

Salesperson First-Time Renewal
New York real estate salespersons renewing for the first time must complete 22.5 hours of continuing education (CE) within their initial two-year licensure period.
These hours must include 2 hours of agency (first renewal only), 3 hours of fair housing or discrimination, 2 hours of implicit bias, 2 hours of cultural competency, 2.5 hours of ethical business practices, and at least 1 hour of recent legal matters.
The remaining time may be allocated to additional elective topics approved by the New York Department of State.
Licensees who fail to meet these requirements by their license expiration date cannot renew until all CE obligations are satisfied.
Salesperson & Broker Subsequent Renewals
After the first renewal, both salespersons and brokers must complete 22.5 hours of CE every two years, with slight adjustments to the agency requirement (1 hour instead of 2). The other mandatory topics remain the same: 3 hours of fair housing or discrimination, 2 hours of implicit bias, 2 hours of cultural competency, 2.5 hours of ethical business practices, and 1 hour of recent legal matters.
Any additional hours may be dedicated to approved elective content.
Failure to complete these requirements on time prevents license renewal until the outstanding hours are fulfilled, and all licensees should verify current regulations with the New York Department of State or an authorized education provider.
