New Mexico Real Estate Exam FAQs
To help you prepare for the New Mexico real state exam, we included information on how to schedule your exam, the exam’s format, and what you’ll be tested on. Now, all that's left to do is study with the best exam prep in the nation!
The New Mexico real estate exam is administered by PSI. Candidates can register and submit materials to determine exam eligibility at the following website. Candidates may also call PSI to schedule exams at 855-557-0621.

Associate Broker Exam
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be a legal resident of the United States
- Must provide documentation of having submitted 2 fingerprint cards to the New Mexico Department of Public Safety and paid $44 fee
- Provide documentation of having obtained errors and omissions insurance
- Must complete 30 -hour New Broker Business Practices course within 1 year of issuance of license
- Must pay exam fee ($95) and license fee ($270)
Broker Exam
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and:
- Provide documentation of having an active associate broker’s license with a real estate brokerage for 2 of the last 5 years immediately preceding the application
- Provide certificate of completion of the Commission-approved 30-hour Brokerage Administration course
- Must obtain errors and omissions insurance
- Brokers who were salespersons on January 1, 2006, must provide documentation that they have met the requirements for and passed the associate broker’s examination prior to being issued a qualifying broker’s license
- Must provide documentation of having submitted 2 fingerprint cards to the New Mexico Department of Public Safety and paid $44 fee
- Must pay exam fee ($95) and license fee ($270)

Associate Broker’s Examination: The exam consists of a national portion and a state portion. The national portion includes 75 questions and candidates have 120 minutes to complete it. The state portion has 50 questions and candidates have 60 minutes to complete it.
Broker’s Examination: The exam consists of a national portion and a state portion. The national portion has 75 questions and candidates have 120 minutes to complete it. The state portion has 50 questions and candidates have 60 minutes to complete it.
The exam is multiple-choice and is given by computer. It may be taken at the following locations: Albuquerque, Farmington, Las Cruces, Santa Fe, and Roswell. It can also be taken in Durango, Colorado, and in Texas at Amarillo, El Paso, Lubbock, and Midland.
The following categories are featured on both the Associate Broker and Qualifying Broker Licensing Exam. The percentages show the make-up of how many questions you should expect from each category.
The national portion covers the following topics:
- Property ownership (Broker 10%)
- Land use controls and regulations (Broker 5%)
- Valuation and market analysis (Broker 7%)
- Financing (Broker 8%)
- General principles of agency (Broker 11%)
- Property condition and disclosures (Broker 7%)

The state portion covers the following topics:
- Real Estate Commission (6 items)
- Licensing requirements (7 items)
- Real Estate Commission regulations (15 items)
- Broker duties, disclosure and brokerage relationships (15 items)
- Additional state-required topics (7 items)
Associate Broker Examination: A passing score is 60 questions correct on the national portion and 38 questions correct on the state portion.

All applicants must provide 2 forms of identification. One must be a valid government-issued identification that includes a signature and photograph. The secondary identification must have a signature and preprinted legal name. All identification must match the name on the candidate’s registration.
Primary identification can be any of the following:
- State-issued driver’s license
- State-issued identification card
- US government-issued passport
- US government-issued military identification card
- US government-issued alien registration card
- Canadian government-issued identification
Secondary identification may be any of the following:
- Credit card (must be signed)
- Social Security card
Candidates are also permitted to bring a basic, non-scientific calculator.
