FAQs About Getting a Real Estate License in Minnesota

Yellow highlight bar — US Realty Training real estate education

To make the process easier, here are the most common questions we get from students becoming agents about what it takes to get licensed and start a career in real estate.

How much does a Minnesota real estate license cost?
    • Pre-licensing education: $400–$600
    • Exam fee: $63
    • Application fee: $100
    • Fingerprinting and background check: $30-$50
How long does it take to get a Minnesota real estate license?

The timeline depends mostly on how quickly you complete the 90 hours of pre-licensing education, pass the exam, and find a sponsoring broker. Minnesota also requires you to apply for your license within one year of passing the exam.

Can I get a Minnesota real estate license if I’m already licensed in another state?

Yes, but the process depends on your state.

For nonresident salespersons, Minnesota lists Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Oklahoma as reciprocal states. Wisconsin has a separate path that requires a 13-hour Wisconsin-to-Minnesota reciprocal pre-license course and passing the state portion of the exam. Applicants from non-reciprocal states must complete Course I, II, and III and pass the state portion of the exam.

Do I need a sponsoring broker for a Minnesota real estate license?

Yes. In Minnesota, only a licensed primary broker can submit a salesperson license application for you. That makes broker sponsorship part of the licensing process, not just something you do after passing.

Do I need to take post-license courses in Minnesota?

No separate post-license course is required in Minnesota.

How often do I renew my Minnesota real estate license?

Minnesota real estate licenses renew every two years. In general, salespersons and brokers must complete 30 hours of continuing education during each two-year license period, and at least 15 hours must be completed during the first 12 months of that period.
