What to Expect

In Kansas, you must complete a 60-hour pre-license course approved by the Kansas Real Estate Commission before applying for a real estate license. We've partnered with a company to provide online pre-licensing courses that include chapter quizzes and a final exam, with opportunities for retakes if needed.
Topics included in the course:
FAQs About Getting a Real Estate License in Kansas
To make the process easier, here are the most common questions we get from students becoming agents about what it takes to get licensed and start a career in real estate.
How Much Does a Kansas Real Estate License Cost?
Most people should budget for these main costs:
- 60-hour pre-license courses: varies by school
- KREC fees: $210 total, which includes:
- $15 application fee
- $70 background fee
- $125 license fee
- Exam fee: $82 per attempter
How Long Does It Take to Get a Kansas Real Estate License?
The timeline depends mostly on how quickly you complete the 60 hours of pre-license education, pass the exam, finish fingerprinting, and submit your application with a supervising broker. Kansas also requires you to pass the salesperson exam before the course certificate expires, so the timing can vary based on when you finish the class and schedule the test.
Can I Get a Kansas Real Estate License If I’m Already Licensed in Another State?
Yes, but Kansas does not have simple blanket reciprocity. KREC’s FAQ states that salesperson applicants who are already licensed in another state must complete 30 hours of Kansas pre-license education instead of 60, and broker applicants licensed elsewhere must complete 34 hours. You will still need to follow Kansas’ application process and licensing requirements.
How Often Do I Renew My Kansas Real Estate License?
Kansas real estate licenses renew every two years. To renew to active status, salespersons and brokers must complete 12 hours of continuing education, including at least 3 hours in an approved Kansas Required Core course.
The two-year renewal fee is $125 for a salesperson. Late renewals are subject to a $100 late fee.
Do I Need a Sponsoring Broker for a Kansas Real Estate License?
Yes. A Kansas salesperson license application must be approved by a licensed Kansas supervising or branch broker, and Kansas specifically states that an original license cannot be issued on inactive status. That means you need a broker affiliation to get your initial active license.
What Should I Know Before Becoming a Real Estate Agent?
Before starting your real estate career in Kansas, it's important to understand the competitive landscape.
Successful agents in Kansas often work outside of standard business hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate their clients' schedules. Building a client base in Kansas requires continuous networking through local events, referrals, and maintaining a strong online presence.
Since the Kansas market includes both rural and urban areas, tailoring your approach based on regional needs is key.
Additionally, marketing and negotiation skills are crucial in the Kansas real estate industry. Agents must develop strong personal brands to stand out in areas like Wichita or Kansas City, where competition is fierce.
