New Jersey Real Estate Exam FAQs
To help you prepare for the New Jersey real state exam, we included information on how to schedule your exam, the exam’s format, and what you’ll be tested on. Now, all that's left to do is study with the best exam prep in the nation!
The New Jersey real estate exam is administered by PSI. For salesperson candidates, your education provider will provide your eligibility electronically to PSI upon successful completion of the course requirements. After your provider has submitted your file to PSI, applicants may go the following website or call 855-579-4634 to register for the real estate exam.
Current processing time: Processing of license applications can take up to 30 days.
Salesperson Exam
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and:
- Must provide proof of having completed 75 hours of pre-license education (this will be submitted to PSI by the education provider when the course work is successfully completed)
- Must submit fingerprints and undergo a criminal background check
- Must register and apply
- Must pay exam fee ($45) and license fee ($160)
Broker Exam
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and:
- Must provide proof of having completed 150 hours of pre-license education
- Must submit documentation of having at least 3 years of experience as a salesperson
- Must provide Certificate of Examination Eligibility in order to schedule the exam; candidates should mail school certificate confirming completion of all 3 broker courses as well as experience report along with a $25 fee
- Must successfully complete the real estate exam
- Must submit fingerprints and undergo a criminal background check
- Must register and apply
- Must pay exam fee ($45) and license fee ($270)

Salesperson Examination: The exam consists of 110 questions and candidates have 4 hours to complete it.
Broker Examination: The exam consists of 115 questions and candidates have 4 hours to complete it.
The exam is multiple-choice and is given by computer. It can be taken at the following locations: Brick, Cherry Hill, Hamilton Square area, North Brunswick, New Providence, Linwood, Rochelle Park, Secaucus, and Parsippany.
The exam covers the following subject areas:
- Property ownership (Salesperson 8%; Broker 10%)
- Land use controls and regulations (Salesperson 5%; Broker 5%)
- Valuation and market analysis (Salesperson 7%; Broker 7%)
- Financing (Salesperson 10%; Broker 8%)
- General principles of agency (Salesperson 13%; Broker 11%)
- Property condition and disclosures (Salesperson 6%; Broker 7%)
- Contracts (Salesperson 17%; Broker 18%)
- Transfer of title (Salesperson 8%; Broker 7%)
- Real estate calculations (Salesperson 10%; Broker 8%)
- Practice of real estate (Salesperson 13%; Broker 14%)
Specialty areas. This includes:
- Duties and powers of the Real Estate Commission (Salesperson 2 items; Broker 3 items)
- Licensing and Requirements (Salesperson 3 items; Broker 4 items)
- Statutes and Rules governing Licensee Activities (Salesperson 22 items; Broker 30 items)
- Additional Requirements (Salesperson 3 items; Broker 3 items)
Salesperson Examination: A passing score is 70% or higher.
Broker Examination: A passing score is 70% or higher.
All candidates are required to bring 2 forms of identification. Identification must exactly match the candidate's name on their exam registration. All identification is required to be current and signature-bearing. The primary form of identification can be any of the following:
- State-issued driver's license
- State-issued identification card
- US government-issued passport
- US government-issued military ID card
- US government-issued alien registration card
- Canadian government-issued ID
Secondary identification can be any of the following:
- Credit card (must be signed)
- Social Security card
- US-issued birth certificate with raised seal
Student IDs and employment IDs are NOT acceptable forms of identification.
Note: Broker exam candidates must also bring their Certificate of Examination Eligibility.
