In Massachusetts, real estate professionals must complete 12 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years to maintain an active license. Unlike some other states, there is no separate “core” requirement; licensees can fulfill all 12 hours through commission-approved courses on topics such as fair housing, agency law, contracts, and other real estate practices.
All continuing education must be completed before the license renewal date, which generally falls on the licensee’s birthday in their renewal year. If CE requirements are not met by the deadline, licensees may face late fees or have their licenses placed on inactive status.
To reactivate an inactive license, all CE requirements must be fulfilled and any applicable fees must be paid before returning to active practice. Licensees are encouraged to verify current regulations with the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Real Estate Brokers & Salespersons or an approved CE provider.
