North Carolina Real Estate Exam Details
To help you prepare for the North Carolina real state exam, we included information on how to schedule your exam, the exam’s format, and what you’ll be tested on. Now, all that's left to do is study with the best exam prep in the nation!
Applicants can apply online for eligibility to take the real estate exam with the North Carolina Real Estate Commission by going to the following site: NCREC Online License Application. First-time users will need to create an account.
The North Carolina real estate exam is administered by Pearson VUE. Once a candidate has received notice of eligibility from the Real Estate Commission, they can go to the following site to schedule their exam. Candidates may also call to schedule their exam at the following number: 855-579-4638.
Current Processing Timeframes: Licenses are usually processed within 7-10 days.
Broker Exam: (North Carolina is a broker-only state; there is only one real estate exam)
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and:
- Must be a US citizen or a legal US resident
- Must provide a Social Security number
- Must be of good character
- Must undergo a criminal background check prior to scheduling the real estate exam
- Must have successfully completed North Carolina's 75-hour pre-licensing education
- Must submit a completed application along with fee and required documentation
- Must obtain a Notice of Examination Eligibility after applying to the Real Estate Commission
- Must pay the exam fee ($56) and license fee ($100)
- Must successfully pass the real estate exam
The exam is given in multiple-choice format and by computer.
The exam consists of a national portion and a state-specific portion. There are 140 total questions, which includes 80 questions in the national portion and 60 questions in the state portion. Candidates have 2.5 hours to complete the national portion and 2 hours to complete the state portion.
The exam can be taken at the following locations: Asheville, Charlotte, Fayetteville, Greenville, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Winston-Salem.
The following categories are featured on the North Carolina Provisional Broker Licensing Exam.
The national portion covers the following topics:
- Agency relationships and contracts
- Real property ownership/interest
- Finance
- Real property
- Marketing regulations
- Property management
- Real estate calculations
The state portion covers the following topics:
- North Carolina real estate license law and Commission rules
- Other North Carolina laws and practices
- General real estate topics
A passing score is 57 correct answers on the national portion and 29 correct answers on the state portion.
All candidates are required to bring 1 form of valid, signature-bearing identification that includes a photograph. The name on the identification must match the name on the candidate's registration. The identification can by any of the following:
- State-issued Driver's License, including Learner's Permit (plastic card only with photo and signature)
- State-issued Identification card
- US government-issued Passport
- US government-issued Military Identification card
- US government-issued alien registration card
- Canadian government-issued identification
- US Employment Authorization card
Student ID and employment ID are NOT acceptable forms of identification. Military IDs may only be used by candidates who choose to take the exam at a testing center; military IDs cannot be used for remote proctoring check-in.
No temporary ID will be accepted.
