Sign up for the required number of CE hours specific to your state’s regulations before your license renewal deadline. Each state mandates different requirements, typically including a mix of mandatory and elective courses to keep you informed about updates in laws, ethics, and industry standards.
CE courses can typically be completed online, in-person, or through live virtual formats, depending on your state’s approved options. Ensure you fulfill both core and elective requirements within the designated timeframe, covering subjects relevant to your practice and state guidelines.
After completing the courses, your education provider will usually report your credits directly to your state’s real estate licensing authority. Be sure to keep your certificates of completion and renew your license through your state’s portal before it expires to stay in compliance.

In Montana, real estate professionals must fulfill continuing education (CE) requirements on an annual basis to maintain an active license. These requirements help ensure that salespersons, brokers, and supervising brokers stay updated on legal regulations, industry practices, and emerging trends. CE credits must be completed by the annual renewal deadline of October 31 to avoid late fees or license inactivation.
Salesperson & Broker Continuing Education
Salespersons and brokers are each required to complete a total of 12 CE hours every year.
Under current guidelines, these 12 hours can be entirely composed of elective courses, provided they are approved by the Montana Board of Realty Regulation. Common elective topics include contract law, real estate marketing, ethics, and property management. Licensees whose status becomes inactive due to incomplete CE must fulfill any outstanding hours and pay applicable fees to regain active status.
Supervising Broker Continuing Education
Supervising brokers also complete 12 hours of CE each year.
Of these, four hours must consist of specialized supervising broker education, covering topics such as leadership, broker oversight, and regulatory compliance. The remaining eight hours can be met through Board-approved elective courses.
Failing to complete these hours by October 31 results in an inactive license, which can be reactivated only after satisfying all outstanding CE requirements and fees. Since regulations are subject to change, licensees should confirm current rules with the Montana Board of Realty Regulation or an approved education provider.
