Getting a North Carolina real estate license takes most people 3 to 6 months, not years. The path is clear once you know the steps. The trick is doing them in the right order so nothing stalls your application.

This guide walks you through all six steps to get your North Carolina real estate license in 2026 — what it costs, how long it takes, what the exam looks like, and what to do the day you pass. No fluff. Just the plan.

Quick answers

QuestionQuick answer
How long does it take to get a North Carolina real estate license? Most people finish in 3 to 6 months. Focused students can do it in about 2.
How much does it cost? Plan on roughly $500 to $1,100 total, depending on which school you choose.
How much education do you need? 75 hours of prelicensing education approved by the North Carolina Real Estate Commission.
Who gives the exam? Pearson VUE has administered the North Carolina exam since March 1, 2024.
Do you need a college degree? No. You must be 18, have a Social Security number, and be a U.S. citizen, national, or qualified alien.
Does North Carolina have reciprocity? No. Reciprocity ended in 2024. Out-of-state agents can skip the course and national exam but must pass the state section.

What are the requirements to get a North Carolina real estate license?

To get a North Carolina real estate license, you must be at least 18 years old, have a Social Security number, and be a U.S. citizen, a non-citizen national, or a qualified alien under federal law. You do not need to live in North Carolina, and you do not need a college degree.

One thing surprises newcomers: North Carolina calls every licensee a "broker." A provisional broker license is North Carolina's entry-level license — the one you earn first, before you have any experience. Other states would call this a salesperson license. You work under supervision until you complete more education, which we cover below.

How to get your North Carolina real estate license in 6 steps

Here is the full path from zero to active license. We call it the USRT North Carolina License Roadmap, and it runs in this order for a reason — each step unlocks the next.

  1. Meet the basic requirements. Confirm you're 18 or older, have a Social Security number, and qualify to work in the U.S. That's the whole eligibility list.
  2. Complete the 75-hour prelicensing course. North Carolina requires 75 hours of prelicensing education from a school approved by the North Carolina Real Estate Commission (NCREC). The course covers national real estate principles plus North Carolina law and practice.
  3. Apply to the NCREC. Submit your license application to the commission along with proof you finished the course. According to the NCREC, the license application fee is $100. Once approved, you get a 180-day window to sit for the exam.
  4. Schedule and pass the exam with Pearson VUE. Create an account on the Pearson VUE website, pick a nearby test center, and book your date. The exam fee is $63. More on the format in the next section.
  5. Clear the character and fitness review. The NCREC reviews every applicant's background and criminal history to confirm the "truthfulness, integrity, good moral character, and general fitness" the license requires. Disclose everything upfront — hiding a past issue hurts you more than the issue itself.
  6. Affiliate with a Broker-in-Charge. Your license stays inactive until you sign on with a brokerage. A Broker-in-Charge (BIC) is the licensed broker legally responsible for supervising an office and its provisional brokers. Once a BIC takes you on, your license goes active and you can start working with clients.

One more step after you're licensed: North Carolina gives provisional brokers 18 months to complete 90 hours of post-licensing education. Finish it and the "provisional" label comes off. Miss the deadline and your license goes inactive, so put it on the calendar the day you start.

What is the North Carolina real estate exam like?

The North Carolina real estate exam is a computer-based test administered by Pearson VUE with two parts: a national section and a North Carolina state section. You get up to 4.5 hours total to finish both, and the exam runs roughly 140 questions across the two sections.

You must pass each section separately. According to the NCREC, the passing standard is a scaled score of 75 on each section, and the two scores are figured independently — so a strong national score can't rescue a weak state score. You'll see your result at the test center as soon as you finish.

Want the deep version before you sit down? Read our full breakdown of the North Carolina real estate exam for the topic list, question types, and study plan.

How long does it take to get a North Carolina real estate license?

Getting a North Carolina real estate license takes most people 3 to 6 months from start to finish. The 75-hour course and exam prep eat up the bulk of that time.

The pace is up to you. Study part-time around a job and 6 months is realistic. Go hard on a self-paced course and you can wrap the education, pass the exam, and sign with a brokerage in about 2 months. The application review and scheduling add a couple of weeks, so build in a little buffer.

How much does it cost to get a North Carolina real estate license?

Getting a North Carolina real estate license costs roughly $500 to $1,100 in 2026. The prelicensing course is the biggest and most variable line item.

Prices shift, so treat these as planning numbers and confirm the current fees with the NCREC and your school before you pay.

Does North Carolina have real estate license reciprocity?

No. North Carolina ended real estate license reciprocity in early 2024 and replaced it with a limited license recognition process. There is no longer a list of "reciprocal states."

Here's what that means if you're already licensed elsewhere. If you hold a license in another U.S. state, territory, or Canadian jurisdiction that has been on active status within the past three years and is equivalent to a North Carolina broker license, you can waive the 75-hour prelicensing course and the national section of the exam. You still have to apply through the NCREC and pass the North Carolina state section. Everyone gets licensed by examination now — experienced agents just have a shorter path.

Is real estate a good career in North Carolina?

Real estate is a strong career choice in North Carolina for self-starters who want control over their schedule and income. The state's population keeps growing, which keeps demand for agents steady across markets like Charlotte, Raleigh, and Asheville.

The honest trade-off: your income is uncapped, but it's also on you. There's no salary and no boss handing you clients. You set your hours, build your own pipeline, and eat what you kill. For people who are hardworking, self-motivated, and genuinely like helping others through a big decision, that freedom is the whole appeal. If you want a predictable paycheck and someone else driving your day, it's a hard fit. Weigh both sides in our guide to the pros and cons of becoming a real estate agent before you commit.

Two more resources for the home stretch: know what shows up in a real estate license background check before you apply, and learn how to choose a real estate brokerage so your first BIC is the right one.

Takeaway

Getting your North Carolina real estate license comes down to six steps: meet the requirements, finish 75 hours of approved education, apply to the NCREC, pass the Pearson VUE exam, clear the background review, and sign with a Broker-in-Charge. Do them in order and you can be working in 3 to 6 months. Your first move is the 75-hour course.

TL;DR: To get a North Carolina real estate license, complete 75 hours of NCREC-approved prelicensing education, apply to the commission, and pass the two-part Pearson VUE exam, then affiliate with a Broker-in-Charge to activate your provisional broker license. The whole process takes about 3 to 6 months and costs roughly $500 to $1,100. North Carolina no longer offers reciprocity, but out-of-state agents can waive the course and national exam section.
